Re: [Salon] THE ZOELLECK SUMMERS PIIE SHOW

China's problems could be related to US tensions and I expect European decline due to Ukraine War.

"What explains China’s slower-than-expected recovery? While a global economic slowdown and fears of future, draconian lockdowns share some of the blame, China’s reopening is suffering from another overlooked problem: Beijing’s intensifying geopolitical rivalry with Washington. "

Warren,

About Japan, you may want to check out "Princes of the Yen" by Richard Werner.

I agree with you about Pres. Biden's mistake.

Seems to me China is evolving. of course, it will not be selling to US as it has becaus of demographic change  will curtail market and time of using home rquity loans for spending has passed.

Governments occasionally pick winners that actually win. But the overall history of industrial policies is dismal for reasons well understood by economists (including Larry Summers and Robert Zoelleck). After government driven rapid growth in Japan in the 1960s, Japan has hardly grown at all over the past three decades. China’s growth over the past thirty years has been spectacular. But, though China spent heavily on infrastructure, most of its growth was private sector driven. China may well have reached the peak of its growth roll coaster. Tragically the Biden Administration is following this failed central planning path with its own industrial policies. God help us.
